(Almost) Definitive guide on Motors (WIP)

Hey everybody,
I’ve summarised a bit of the various posts on the motors that can be found around in this forum, and wrote this Google Doc that you can all see, comment and edit.

check it out and help complete it if you can / want.
The idea is to start preparing a simple, clean doc about the motors to expand the awesome specsheets that @davehakkens produced.

let’s keep the messy discussion here in the forum or as comments in the doc and there put only the final results.

It would be great to put some examples, with the pictures of the label of the working motors that people are using.

If anyone here has made the machines and they are working, please post images of the nameplate of your motor and what the pros and cons you see in them

Handy table for torque. Just curious what are the colour codes for?

 

Working it out isn’t really the issue it’s what sellers list it as on eBay that’s usually off. And knowing what torque we need for each machine.

The coulors are Just to locate faster which combination between motor and gear are almost the same. For the Shredder Ithink we need minimum of 300 NM to shred without problems, I will try in the next days, for the extruder I don’t know because I have never built one.

@allans are you going to use those motors on an extruder? because they won’t work for a shredder.

0.37kw is not enough for shredding, and if you convert the motors to single phase the resultant power will be even less. There are plenty of videos in youtube that show how to convert a 3 phase motor to single phase, you need to get some capacitors and rewire it.

I am getting some issues trying to get conected my three phases motor, I was wondering if I need to be worried about what kind of conection i need to start ande wich one after starting. May be someone has a diagram how to wire a threephases motor correctly or a tip that can share.

@unratonloco, there is plenty on youtube about, just search for ‘3 phase motor’ or variants of it: ‘3 phase motor wiring’. You can go also with trial and error, also take into account the kind of connection: delta or star, google gives you lots of results about ‘3 phase motor delta star connection’, images & videos. there is not much to it at the end.

I’m starting work on the extrusion machine. I’ve been searching these forums for some info on what sorts of motor work well for this; there are loads of posts about the shredder motor but very little I can find on the extrusion motor – can anyone point me to some good threads on this or put info here (this seems like the best place for it (a sticky thread on motors, but the google doc is almost all about the shredder).
Ideally I’d like some tips on what sort of equipment has the correct type of motors and gearboxes in them; or is it best to buy a new motor and gearbox set?

Hi! I’m trying to figure out in my country (El Salvador) if it’s easy or hard to find a good motor, and I’ve found this one:

The last image has the specs of the motor and also the seller states that the output speed is 45 RPM. The motor already has a reductor, it’s a 3 phase, so if it already has a reductor I shouldn’t worry about it right?

I want to build a shredder machine. I am looking for a motor. Since I know nearly nothing about electricity I’ve spend the last few days reading many topics on this forum.

I want to use the shredder at home. I do have 1 phase electricity. I read in the  google docI that after plenty of testing it turned out that shredding machines on 1phase will definitely not work.  If hat is true I can stop my project since I have no 3 phase option. However in later posts (the document is end 2017) many people have asked questios about 1 phase shredding motors and have been given positive reply’s …. So that has left me confused. Can somebody please help?

I want to shred PLA (messed up 3d prints) to about 5 mm pieces.
Is that even possible on a 1 phase electricity supply?
And if so, will a motor with these specs do? It is an old paint mixing machine with speed reduced to 30 rpm.

you can use single phase motors but its not recommended. to run a 3 phase motor (2 + Kw), you need a VFD (3Kw = 120 Euro) which also provides more control and fine tuning as well safety (fault/over torque protection) ; see buying guide here.

Single phase shredding can work. The torque can be high enough if you are willing to accept a slower speed. Look at this thread: http://onearmy.world/community/forums/topic/shredder-bulid-idea/
I’m working on a shredder using the same basis, but it’s not finished yet.

If you get  wood chopper just be aware that there are two types. The type you want includes a gearbox which slows the blade down so it slowly grinds the wood. There is another type which has a very fast spinning disc with blades on it. The fast type doesn’t work well with plastic – it makes a huge noise and takes a very long time; eventually you end up with a plastic dust which is not very good for several reasons (hard to collect, blows around, colours get so well mixed that everything you make is brown).

Right, I’ve got a motor running at 4,000 RPM, 2.4 kW, 240v, 2 pole. From what I can tell I’ll need at least a 50:1 gearbox, if not a 70:1.

Hi all, I am just getting started. So please forgive the basic question.

 

I’m procuring a motor, and I’d like to know if this one could work. Would someone with experience give me some advice? I don’t know much about motors.

I imagine I’ll need a reducer. Thanks in advance for the help.

should be fine, most heavier duty motors I’ve came along were around 1500 RPM, I can’t tell why but may be because they run more steady and longer; especially considering the bearings have to swallow whopping 3000 RPM it makes sense. More or less you need 50 – 70 RPM for the v3 shredder; you would need at least a 1:40 reducer, 1:60 would be better (more torque) but slower. From what I’ve read it’s not ideal for the gearbox to have so much reduction because of the friction and energy loss it creates. If you don’t have 3 phase, you need also an inverter (which gives you also over torque protection), cost around 120 Euro new, 80 second hand. That is a high quality motor made by Emerson used to run centrifugal pumps. It is close coupled and fan cooled rated for 40C. They use these a lot in agricultural situations. Btw, going from single phase to three phase is called a converter, an inverter changes DC to AC.

I seem to be experiencing a very uncommon problem.  One of these single phase air compressor motors I pulled had a rusted bolt going through the top of the compressor fan, apparently holding everything together.  Now that it has been removed I would assume I should be able to simply pull it apart.  My other motor had a bolt near the bottom I was able to unscrew and the whole thing came off the shaft, but this one seems to be held together by sheer force of will.
Is that other little thing on the top another bolt, or is there anything else I can do to get this thing apart?  Has anyone else here experienced something like this?

Hi! I’m starting to get everything ready to build the shredder, so i had the luck to find a bunch of motors in my backyard. I found this motor with a reducer and I would like to know if these specs are appropriate for this project.
The tag with red letters is from the motor and the greenish one is from the reducer.
From what i can see (excuse me for the dirty tags :s) the motor has these specs:
2,2 kW- 1420rpm; 2,6 kW- 1720rpm
And the reducer has these specs:
97,3rpm
I wonder if the reducer’s rpm is suitable to this project instead of the 70rpm desired rotations per minute. Thank you!

@andrevieira4, should be fine. it’s a little too fast for some plastics but with an inverter you can slow it down by max. 50%; otherwise motor running hot. but i’d be you i’d open gearbox and motor; not sure what happened to it but it didn’t receive much love.

Hi Team!

(Update!!! I found a VFD on Amazon/Wish for 100, should do the trick).

Pretty new to PP, but have a question about my motor. I have a NEW 200VAC 2HP 1170RPM motor I picked up for $100. I want to spend the same on getting it geared down to 70RPM or even less (debating a 20:1 speed reducer). What are my options?

Want to spend the same on the gearbox. I found this worm gear on ebay, Base RPM 1750RPM but rated load is only 1.14HP, am I out of luck?

Just wondering if anyone knows if a treadmill motor would be a suitable application for the shredder. It has a 2kw motor. I don’t know if a treadmill uses a gear box but it has variable speeds. Any advice would be very appreciated.

@colleen, really hard to say without pictures of the motor plate and the gearing. You want a final speed of 40 – 70 RPM and a torque between 220 (still jams) and 500 Nm. Going higher could eventually destroy the shredder blades. Here are number of tools in the ‘Resource’ section.

Hi.
I found those 2 motors 5hp (USD 150.00) to Shredder PRO  and 3hp (USD95.00)for Extrusion PRO.
Do you guys think those are good motors for this projects?
I would need a reduction gear ratio 25:1 for Shedder Pro
and what would be good RPM to the Extrusion PRO?

As i am new on this i would like to ask few questions:

RPM of Shredder PRO around 20 RPM
RPM of Extrusion PRO = 263 RPM

I am planning to use 5HP Motor on both machines. That sound reasonable?
Would be possible to use speed controller besides a gearbox?

Just one last question, i found this motor single false:(photo)
that would work on both project or better use 3 phase
