Can this be recycled? And hello from Bristol, UK!

Hi there,

My name is Chris and I work at a spice & seasonings company in Bristol, UK.

The spice blends we produce are packaged in small plastic sachets (image attached) and unfortunately a lot of them get wasted, it’s an unavoidable part of the process. So, I’m looking into ways of recycling the plastic ourselves – the dream would be to set up a workshop equipped with some amazing Precious Plastic machines!

However, I’m not sure if this particular type of plastic is suitable or safe for melting and then injecting into a mold, for example. Here is the exact material structure of the plastic:

12μm PET / 50μ PE -EVOH -PE

(The above information is from the technical data sheet for the plastic.)

So, does anyone know if this plastic be recycled? Is it safe to melt? And could it be repurposed into something else? Has anyone had any luck recycling this kind of plastic? (So many questions, sorry about that!)

Again, I have attached an image of one of the empty plastic bags in question.

Many thanks to anyone who can help!

All the best,

Chris

Would really appreciate some help on this if anyone would be so kind, many thanks in advance!

Chris

Hi there @chrishollis91 !
Great that you think about recycling these bags!
Basically, PET and PE both can be recycled quite well, However if these plastic types are fused together, it will be impossible seperating and recycling them again. I will actually be in Bristol for two days this week, I’ll drop you a pm!
All the best
