Hey guys,

I know your first response will be, “Do people even buy CDs anymore??”

But the answer is yes, they do.

This was a material investigation for a commission that I received to make 300 cases for an album launch. After much testing with an injector I’ve built here in Copenhagen, I came to the unfortunate conclusion that it wasn’t possible to make a run of 300 items to the same quality with this machine. Not in any reasonable amount of time anyway.

This case is made in two parts, so two moulds were used. They were made from sheets of aluminium bolted together. I used glidespray (silicone spray) inside the mould as a release agent. It was cheap and didn’t burn, even at 250 degrees.

I preheated the mould in an oven to ensure the plastic reached the edges of the mould, as I was attempting to injection mould a wide piece that was only 5mm thick. Without preheating, the plastic did not reach the edges of the mould.

This is made from PS, a combination of leftover white sheets from an architectural model shop, and black biscuit trays. Even though there was much more white in the mix, the black totally dominates when melted together.
