CNC-machining precious plastic

I’ve been doing some quick testing on cnc-machining plastic created with the extrusion machine made by using the technique which has been discussed in this topic. I thought I’d share my results here and post later tests and experiments here as well.

The type I did the first tests on was PP (5) and gives nice and promising results! Machining goes very smooth using a single flute upcut, 18000 rpm and a feedrate of 25 mm/s. The only downside is that I now sometimes get some white burrs from the plastic. But quickly going over it with a heat gun gets rid of those.

Hey @siemenc ! Looking amazing! What is the object exactly? A soap holder? Were you able to reuse the “waste” plastic of your object?

Hi flo-2,

That was just a random 3D-surface I quickly drew out to see what kind of surface finish I could get in the first place. I did keep the shavings! But since I haven’t build the machines myself yet I haven’t tried remelting it. 🙂

Hi,
To not waste time at keeping shavings, I saw my friend use a vaccum plugged on the cnc milling machine when is running 😉
A clean bag is better before start with a different material in order to separate materials.

Yes, we do that as well with cutting wood, it’s the thing you can see behind the cutting head. But I didn’t want to run it through the extraction system as it would end up being mixed with wood dust & fibers. 🙂
