Extruders comparison

03/12/2018 at 02:13

Hi, mi name is Manuel Aguayo and we are aiming to start recycling and joining you in this fight. I don’t know much about plastic so here I am asking for help.

I was looking for a machine that extrudes and makes 3D filament from PET bottles and I came across with the Filabot company and Precious plastic community. On the one hand the Filabot EX6 extruder is expensive but they told me that it will do the work; however the price is too high. On the other hand The Precious plastic extruder is a cheaper and easy to build one.
Taking into considerantion that we would like to extrude PET from bottles and these machines… should I buy the filabotor the precious plastic extruder can do the work perfectly?

Greetings!!!

Ps: Is there a 3d comercial printer that prints PET?

Hi Manuel,

In order to use the Precious Plastic extruder, you will need to shred the plastic in some way. The Precious Plastic shredder pro will be able to take care of shredding, but you can also cut up plastic by hand (obviously slower).

I haven’t built the PP extruder (hope to soon though) but I have looked through the designs and it is not easy to build, especially considering the amount of material you will have to source/order, and the time commitment is substantial especially if you don’t have any experience or knowledge about machines or welding. The extruder pro will probably run you close to $1500-$2000 US to purchase parts, machine parts, assemble and weld some of the components. You’ll obviously save a lot of money if you build the PP extruder rather than buy the Filabot EX6, just recognize that you’ll need access to a machine shop and welding equipment.

Also you stated that, “They told me it will do the work…”, may not be true. A company will tell you whatever they have to to sell you their equipment even if their equipment doesn’t fully suit your needs, so make sure you do some research and look at in depth reviews to see if this is actually the case.
