Modular Construction Guide

29/12/2013 at 16:57

The concept for a modular phone seems, at heart, very simplr. Each block/component serving a particular function or functions, simply clicked into place on a base board next to each other. There you have it, away you go, phone is all together with every component you need/want. It seems too easy to be viable, and presents a whole new set problems. Phones are designed to get the maximum efficiency from each component in relation to where they are placed inside the device. Factors that contribute to these decisions involve simple things such as ergonomics/form factor, heat conduction, impact tolerances and durability as well as more complex things such as circuit efficiency, electromagnetic interference, deterioration due to operation and health risks. To the average consumer, one would assume that none of these thoughts are a concern to them. They simply want the best products that suit their lifestyle and needs. Introducing a modular phone means that people should be REQUIRED to know at least the basics of constructing their phone and the problems presented by the combination of their chosen components, because they aren’t going to have someone put it together for them (kinda defeats the purpose). You can’t have people buying a product, put it together wrong and complain that it doesn’t work because they put two components together that heat up excessively and destroy eachother, or put several components together that are incompatible resulting in poor performance. My concern is that the concept of modular phones, while intuitive, accommodating and progressive, is that it will be too complex to be widely accepted. It will need to be accompanied by various guides and instructions telling the consumer how to correctly construct the device efficiently. That said, I am excited by the idea, and can’t wait to own a phone that I have practically ‘built myself’ without compromise. The culture of ‘mobile phone’ technology is moving soo quick, it’s exciting to see developments and what new applications they have. Connor
