My "Making the Shredder" Story

30/04/2016 at 09:16

I have downloaded the document collection, and printed every PDF about the Shredder.
This is the week I will be finding a shop to do the laser cutting. I will discuss and get a few quotes.

Hello @badger
Do you have any updates on your Shredder project? The community would love to hear back from you.

Ah! I do apologise for not continuing the story.

I contacted 2 plasma cutter and one water-jet cutter services for quotes to cut out all the stainless steel parts.

The water-jet cutter quoted $1140+GST (like VAT) which is way over the budget I had in mind for this.
One of the plasma cutters kindly advised me that for such small scale parts, plasma cutting would give a rough finish and recommended that I get the work done by a water-jet cutter.

So I decided that this project was a bit ambitious for my means, and that I would explore other shredder options. So I notified the other plasma cutter (who was very slow in responding, even though there was a lot of email exchange about file formats and converting – I did the file conversion for him!) that I was no longer pursuing the project in this form, and not to put any more time into preparing his quote.

So I am at an end with this for now.

Cheers,
Badger

@badger in case you are interested, this is how the parts look like if you cut them with laser (see file attached)

You can use an angle grinder and sand paper to clean them, but it is a lot of work.

Thanks xxxolivierxxx!
What was the cost of the cutting, if you don’t mind me asking?

@badger sorry for not responding earlier, it’s been a busy year for me 🙂
I spent $400 for the laser cutting job, and $60 for the hex bar

Those parts in your picture look a lot like they have been plasma cut.
