Process of Selection of plastic

Hi everyone!
This is my first topic, and here I am, asking about the whole process of plastic selection. I was wondering if there’s a good/best way to select the type of plastic (in industrial quantities) in order not to waste time, money and labor.
Is there any precise rule to quickly identify a type of plastic? If there’s no exact process, at least the idea is to start by the first step, which would be to take away at least one type of plastic, and therefore the ‘unselected’ plastic will be less than before.
NOTE: Please do NOT forget that the question is about a huge amount of plastic and always looking for more efficiency and automatization of the process in the long term.
EXTRA QUESTION: When is the suitable time to start the selection process? Before or after washing? Is there any crucial advantage/disadvantage on the timing?
Anyway, any piece of information that you can contribute will be of huge help. Thank you very much.
José
P.S: Sorry for my english, I hope you can understand me without any trouble.
