Dave: Please dual upload to PeerTube!

Judging from your videos and your projects, you definitely understand the value of open-source design – in fact, just from your opinion on Facebook, you clearly know how exploitative and dangerous corporate social media can be. With that in mind, I think you’d really be interested in a growing platform called PeerTube!

PeerTube runs on fully open-source software, is decentralized (meaning hosted on multiple websites by independent people and communities – making it impossible for any one group to collect and sell everyone’s data), and is even, as its name suggests, based partly on peer-to-peer connections – this makes the energy requirement for servers and for users much lower, because people host their own videos on their own computers rather than copying them and sending them to a central server. And, since it uses the ActivityPub protocol, it can even interact with other similarly decentralized open platforms, like Mastodon, Friendica, Diaspora, Funkwhale, WriteFreely, and PixelFed (for those who don’t know what that means, imagine if you could like and comment on a YouTube video from your Twitter account, even if you don’t have an account with Google. It’s just like that, but with PeerTube and Mastodon replacing YouTube and Twitter)

Despite being really really cool, PeerTube is struggling to get started. It’s got a sort of negative feedback loop going on, where no one uploads there because no one watches there, and no one watches there because no one uploads there. It’d be super rad if you could play your part in spreading this awesome platform by uploading your videos there as well as YouTube! And to everyone else reading this post: please ask some of your favorite content creators to dual upload as well!

Addendum:

Well some serious Proof of Concept will indeed be needed to convince anyone.

After finally finding a site with Peertube videos (most links did not work), 95% was pirated and the other stuff only played for 5 seconds and got stuck in a buffer loop.

Cool idea, not impressed.

@arthurlutz ,

Well… Go do it 😉

This might sound silly, but the videos are licensed this way to enable sharing like this. So Anybody wanting to support Peertube can go ahead share these videos, as long as the proper attribution is kept in mind.

There are many more videos on youtube that could be shared like this, but it’s up to Peertube (or their community) to make it happen.

For this community, it would be a nice Proof of Concept if you could actually show it working, so do share your PeerTube links and comments/experiences on this topic in this topic.

Then maybe to get this started it’s a matter of finding a peertube instance that is OK with hosting this content. For example https://gouttedeau.space/about/instance seems be a good fit and have the youtube import functionality activated.

Hi @arthurlutz ,

The license is underneath the youtube video:

Creative Commons Attribution licence (reuse allowed)

Or in other words:

CC Attribution (by):

All CC licenses require that others who use your work in any way must give you credit the way you request, but not in a way that suggests you endorse them or their use. If they want to use your work without giving you credit or for endorsement purposes, they must get your permission first.

What’s the licence of the videos ? If the licence enables it we can dual post them for the project until this idea becomes more widespread ?
