I asked the question over at Reddit, seems most people think Xiaomi will be better off supporting Ara, making modules etc..

Ah. Though, well probably see som other modular initiatives. Around the time Magic Cube surfaces ZTE released their concept for a modular mobile phone ECO Moebius. Then we also have the two, current, Finnish initiatives Puzzle Phone and Vsenn.

but anyway, as far as I can see it the only contenders so far are Ara, Puzzlephone and maybe Neptun Suite. What lacks Puzzlephone and Neptun Suite is the open source aspect, the individualization possibilities, plus Neptun will be comparably expensive… in 1999-2000 we faced already some “standard” wars in regard to Graphics cards, we had a standard war between CDs and Video Discs, VHS vs Betamax, Sega Saturn vs Sony Playstation, I could name a lot more of those 🙂 From my experience (and from what I hope) I cant see anything beating Ara as the leading modular smartphone on the market.

I am hopeful that a Chinese company might release a modular smartphone, I wrote a little on the Magic Cube that I linked to above, and the Eco Mobius, link herehttp://www.modularandroid.com/zte-eco-mobius-modular-smartphone-release-date-will-it-happen/I went over to Vsenn and read a little of the info they shared on the modular smartphone they plan on releasing, and I would have to say that Vsenn seem determined on becoming the third modular smartphone brand to enter the market, behind Ara and the [email protected], I find it really hard to accept the Neptune Suite as a competitor in the modular smartphone market. It really is just a closed group of devices.. I’m completely ruling them out.

Yes, we actually learned about Vsenn before we learned about Puzzle Phone. And, indeed, they do seem to be the real deal. Nice read on Moebius. Some new stuff in there for me.

There have been some crazy tries on modular before, I still droll over Bento – http://www.yankodesign.com/2011/05/06/bento-box-kinda-like-voltron/ but none of them managed the jump to high consumer interest and have rather been items of curiosity. What I see as possible mainstream modular solutions is:- Ara- ZTE Eco Mobious- Puzzlephone as outsider due to the rather closed ecosystem Vsenn – I am not able to take them serious yet, their web presence is not trust invoking
