How thick of HDPE can the shredder handle?

18/07/2019 at 20:53

I constantly find 50 gallon HDPE barrels washed up after the floods in my area each spring.  I’d like to use the material, so Precious Plastic machines caught my attention.  The plastic is about 1/4″ thick though, and I haven’t seen any videos of anyone shredding plastic that thick.  Will the machine handle it?  Does it just depend on what motor I put on my shredder when I make it?

no, normal 3phase 2Kw motors with a 1:20 – 1:40 can deal with up to 3 – 4mm thickness as maximum.
4Kw at 1:40 can cut around 5 mm but it’s quite violent for your shredder; the drive shaft may break. here some links about the shredder & motor.

Thanks.  On that page, I see that someone made a small shredder out of a hand planer.  I salvaged the cutting head out of a broken 4″ jointer earlier in the year.  Maybe I will try to make something with that.
