How to make smart phone case
How should I approach making a smart phone case? The options I see are making a mold for the injection machine or compression machine or 3d print a case with recycled filament made from the extruder. What method would work best and with what kinds of plastics?
I live in Atlanta, Georgia and work with low income communities. The Precious Plastics project could help raise awareness about plastic pollution and maybe even start some sort of small business but I’m struggling to find marketable products. A phone case is the most marketable product I could think of thus far!
Great idea, we’ve been wanting to try this out for a while ourselves, never made it of the idea table… Probably the injection machine is best suited for this. However note that it takes quite some precision to make a case, since it needs to snap on your phone perfectly. And creating a precise mold requires precise engineering like CNC milling. Which can be pricey..
Hi! We had the same idea. Do you already have the mold?
Just my 2 cents:
Considering that there are thousands of different phone models, it would be much easier to 3D print the cases rather than making a mold for each phone. If you make a mold, it will become obsolete shortly.
You can search for free 3D cellphone models like these http://tf3dm.com/3d-models/smartphone and then import the model on a CAD software and sculpt the case around the phone, or you can also find free cases models like:
