How to produce a negative for the injection?

11/05/2016 at 10:34

Hi plastic people,

My machines should be ready by the end of the month, the first thing I wanted to produce is a door handle with the injection. I found some old, vintage door handles and I was wondering how I could create a negative (a form for the molten Plastic) of an old handle. Would plaster be an option? Has anyone experimented with some materials? Would be glad to hear some recommendations.

Sunny greetings from Berlin,

Lukas

Here’s an idea. Pour some concrete in a wooden or plastic box, then cover it with a plastic bag or a sheet of thin plastic. Rub your door knob with oil or grease and then insert half of the door knob, over the plastic covered concrete. Finally, pour more concrete to cover the top half of the door knob. Once the concrete is dry, you can take the top “concrete mold” part, remove your door knob, fill any holes in the concrete to make the interior smooth, and there you have it.

The end result should look somewhat like this:
