How to tighten flange bearings on shredder?
Part way through assembling our shredder and all going well so far. I notice in Dave’s video he bolts the flange bearings right at the end which makes total sense in ensuring you have the blades lined up well. I want to be able to do this, but not sure how? How do I access the bolt heads to tighten to nuts and ensure the flange bearings are attached nice a tight? I have lock nuts to ensure the bearings stay tight over time too.
I’m sure I must be missing something simple?? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

yes, that’s a tricky one; please create a fixture to simulate the end position and tie them up. I didn’t cover this particular case but here some inspiration.
Thanks for linking to this thread – some interesting suggestions in here but I can’t see anything about how everyone is tightening the bearing?
Are people welding the bolt to the plate so you can simply tighten a nut without having to hold the bolt? I can’t see how if leaving the bearings until the end, you can get access to the bolt heads to tighten the nuts?
Not sure I fully understand and we’ve never used this version but how about this:
1. assemble it all as best you can
2. take a pen and remember the bearing position by drawing an outline along the bearing edges or use superglue
3. disassemble all til the point you can tie up the bolts
this procedure still leaves some axle alignment errors and I am honestly puzzled how to do this too 🙂

I thought this was the standard version? It’s the standard files – and trying to follow Dave’s video for the assembly, but he appears to somehow tighten the bearing with everything else assembled and there just doesn’t seem to be the access to hold onto the bolt head to do that. Only option I can see is as you say. I have been assembling, finding where it clashes and marking the outside frame to where I think the bearing should be moved to, to get clean movement.
What version have you assembled out of interest?

Well, there are versions out there addressing some problems; ours as in the link I’d say is a pre-v4 version.
However, I don’t know how much play you have on the axle & bearings but I do know there is quite errors coming with laser cut for cycle pockets. If you could manage to assemble this on a flat stone plate and use self made gauge blocks (some metal cut offs) to align the axle up in both directions then you can reduce the damage of misalignment at least.

solved: Just used two nuts on the end of each bolt to create an old school lock nut. Used that to then slacken the other nut, allowing me to adjust the bearing position 🙂 Hopefully that might help anyone else stuck in the future
