Maker Faire (Maker Media) has gone bust

08/06/2019 at 16:08

Story from TechCrunch: https://techcrunch.com/2019/06/07/make-magazine-maker-media-layoffs/

I don’t know if any of the planned Maker Faire events (e.g. the one in Eindhoven) have been cancelled, or whether local organisers will still run an event under a different name.

Message from Eindhoven Maker Faire:

To our great regret, we too have recently learned that the American Maker Media is in financial trouble. Maker Media Inc, the company that for years put the MAKE magazine on the market and the initiator of Maker Faires worldwide, let its 22 employees go last week. They are working hard to restart the organization as a non-profit and we strongly support this choice.

Eindhoven Maker Faire – like all hundreds of Maker Faires worldwide – is an independent event, so no worries, the Eindhoven Maker Faire will take place on 28 and 29 September 2019. Of course we will keep you informed of further developments in the coming period for Maker Media.

We wish Maker Media a lot of strength in these difficult times.

@renepare

Thanks for sharing.

Just shows how strong a ‘maker’ community can be.
The unfortunate demise of the central organisation should indeed not mean the makers can’t ‘Do It Themselves’.
Let’s make sure it does not become the end off an era, but an (r)evolution into something even better!

Update on MAKE from TechCrunch

The old company has been reborn as “Make Community”.

It looks like they will still be producing the magazine – but as a quarterly publication – if they can get enough subscribers.
