Indeed, making your own aluminium moulds with lost wax casting is one of the best and cheapest methods. You can find more information about it and real life experiences in the Mould Design Community topic.

I love the idea. One can make a mini foundry to cut off the costs of a professional furnance.
If only I had a 3D printer 🙂
