Upgraded Shredder – Complete

27/07/2017 at 22:56

I had the privilege of building a shredder for our office at the Native Shoes headquarters in Vancouver. The idea was just a pipe dream months ago, but after several weeks of work, I was able to finish it off. Features and photos below:

-2hp 3-phase motor
-Variable frequency drive (forward/reverse and speed control) – 30-60 RPM
-30:1 gear reduction
-interchangeable shredder screens
-keyed power switch
-emergency stop switch
-fire extinguisher
-powder coated parts
-6″ pivoting casters

The big add on’s to add a level of safety to the project were the e-stop, the hopper lid, and a keyed power switch. This will prevent anyone from using it without the proper key.

Hello!  Chadiator

I am a new member of this project and super impressed by the shredder you built, Bravo!   Would it be possible to come by and see it working ?     My hope is that we can build one in this area, North Burnaby and learn more about this while providing an answer to the incredible amount of plastic, eventually taking this concept to Mexico.   Hope to hear back from you

@chadiator Wow! Great work! The shredder is looking amazing!
I also like the built-in security mechanisms a lot!

Hi @nic0, the screen I built has holes that are about 1/2 and inch in diameter. However, with the material we are using (EVA), it was jamming up, and we’ve actually switched to using no screen at all.

great! a question for you…Which diameter do you select to the hole in the sieves?

Thank you! Super happy with how it came out.
Good call on the video functionality; that would be cool.

Sounds good! I will definitely do that. Hopefully the electrical is in soon.

I am going on vacation for a month tomorrow, so I have set a reminder in my calendar to follow up with a video when I’m back! Stay tuned! @davehakkens

I’m always up for a video @chadiator! Get it running and show me how it handles your shoes 😀

@davehakkens I wish I had a working model of it to share with you! Would taking a video of it help at all?

Hoping to have the 240v plug installed ASAP so we can get this thing munching some shoes.

Super nice @chadiator, love to quick mesh changer! You got 3D model or technical drawing of the machine? Would love to have a proper look at it 🙂

@stampro01 @flo-2 @dreek00

Thank you all! I felt like the safety features were a must have for such an aggressive machine (massive blades). Perhaps @davehakkens can work some of these into the 3.0 plans!
