A washing machine of any size will do the job perfectly, the only thing that you need to consider is that if you plan to wash shredded plastic, then you should not use drum washing machines, otherwise the plastic shreds will go through the drum holes and the washing machine will eventually clog.

Plastic should be washed either entire or cut into chunks big enough so they don’t go through the drum holes

Thank you for your answer because I would not want that mayonnaise remains of mustard ketchup stick to the walls of the washing machine and then wash the laundry madam will not agree lol I will risk the divorce

Im currently washing collected plastic items and storing them (no shredder as yet). When I have a shredder up and running I’ll be washing and drying the plastic before shredding. when shredding plastic micro practicals can sometime also be produced therefore washing the shredded plastic you’ll be washing the them down the drain….

@jeanmi now that you mention it, I never thought about the posibility of someone washing recycled plastic with the same washing machine where you wash your clothes 😛
Ideally, you would get an old-second-hand-cheap washing machine and use it only for this purpose.

You can buy one OR make one yourself from mesh fabric. There are lots of tutorials online on how to make them. 🙂

I was thinking on this to, and the use of an old washing mashine. Like the one on the images, this type you can remove and use the motor, electronic and the drum.

I am wondering if it’s possible using grey water for cleaning the plastic or maybe sea water? or will have that a bigger influence on the quality of melting the plastic?

I’m just searching for a possibiliy to reduce the amount of water for the cleaning process.

@jeanmi you may try caustic soda. It may not be the best option for environment but it is going to be best result for cleaning.

@jeanmi just water, there’s no need to add any detergent. If the plastic contains any oil residues then you can use a little cloth detergent (regular detergent) and/or use hot water to facilitate the removal of any dirt

Well in the video the machine does exactly what a washing machine at home does. How about using an adapted old washing machine for washing and drying plastic 🙂
