Alo Osberg

I want to explore synthetic waste as material for traditional crafts. Outside of my conceptual art, I also practice pre-industrial skills including basket weaving, woodworking, fiber arts and wild harvest. I am interested in exploring a sort of folk futurism where we might imagine a humanity depleted of traditional materials but still imbued with the knowledge-ways of our many diverse ancestors. Whereas most ancient craft comes from a highly situated ecology, knowledge and tradition, today our craft creation exists in the context of a global climate crisis, an ever-accessible internet and a domineering “Western” culture. Using craft as a medium to explore our past as much as our future, I believe we can tap into a deep human desire to create with our hands across cultures and through time, despite (and thanks to) our many differences and identities.
