My name is Fuller, I recently graduated from the marine science program with a minor in stats at Cal State Monterey Bay. During that time I began researching macro-debris accumulating on beaches around the Monterey Bay. I have also been working with the communities within the Ulithi Atoll in the Federated States of Micronesia for the past two summers monitoring the accumulation of macro-debris. When I returned from Micronesia the first summer I founded a marine debris research and education 501c3 nonprofit organization called Ocean Debris Management Initiative (ODMI). This being said we have collected, sorted and recorded over 670 lbs of marine debris in the past year. Approximately 70% of it is plastic. I really want to do something useful with the debris we collect with ODMI and interested collaborators to help the plastic problem in our national marine sanctuary and in remote islands such as the beautiful islands that make up the Ulithi Atoll in the Federated States of Micronesia. Over 1,300 students in California have helped collect the 670 lbs of debris from sensitive coastal habitats. Let’s empower these students and our community by giving them the tools to help quantify the plastics that are washing up on our beaches and let’s make something useful out of it!
